New York City is on the verge of enacting one of the most ambitious climate laws in the country. Local Law 97, also known as the Climate Mobilization Act, would set strict new energy emission targets for large buildings in an effort to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the city reach its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.

These targets would need to be met through a combination of measures such as improved building envelope efficiency, on-site renewable energy generation, and increased use of low-emitting heating and cooling systems.
In addition to reducing emissions, the law would also create a new energy performance standard for large buildings that would need to be met every five years. This standard would ensure that buildings are continuously improving their energy efficiency and making progress towards meeting the emission targets.
